Atopic Dermatitis / Eczema Treatment & Clinical Trials in South Florida & Texas
What is Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)?
Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a chronic condition that causes your skin to break out in rashes, often leaving the affected patches of skin feeling itchy and red. Eczema occurs most frequently in children, but it can also affect adults and teenagers as well.
What causes Eczema?
Eczema is caused by a genetic mutation that prevents your body from holding in moisture and fighting harmful bacteria. Causes of eczema may include:
- Family or personal medical history of eczema
- Certain food allergies
- Asthma
- Hay fever
What are the symptoms of Eczema?
Atopic dermatitis symptoms often begin to appear before the age of five, with the rash symptoms continuing into your teen and adult years. Symptoms may also disappear and then reappear throughout the years. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis include:
- Itchy skin
- Dry skin
- Patches of skin that are red
- Tiny, raised bumps
- Cracked, rough or peeling skin
- Raw or swollen skin due to scratching
The rash may appear anywhere on the body, including the face, mouth area, hands, wrists, arms, neck, and the back of the elbows or knees.
How is Atopic Dermatitis diagnosed?
Atopic dermatitis is diagnosed by one of our dermatologist at Skin Care Research, LLC who will examine the affected skin. Our dermatologists may also go over your medical history and may recommend additional testing for further diagnosis.
What treatment options are available for Eczema?
Although there is no cure for atopic dermatitis, there are certain treatment options that can help alleviate your symptoms. Treatment options for atopic dermatitis may include:
- Antibiotic creams
- Corticosteroid creams
- Oral corticosteroids
In severe cases of eczema, our dermatologists may suggest, along with a topical cream, to wrap the affected skin area with a medical bandage. Light therapy may also be used as an alternative treatment option if topical treatments are unable to alleviate symptoms. In addition, eczema clinical trials may be another treatment option to consider if other therapies fail to produce successful results.
