Psoriasis Clinical Trials: What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells. It causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin, leading to the formation of thick, red patches covered with silvery scales. These patches, known as plaques, can be itchy, painful, and sometimes even crack and bleed.

Psoriasis can occur at any age, but it most commonly develops in adulthood. The condition can affect any part of the body, including the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back, and nails. Triggers for flare-ups can vary among individuals but may include stress, certain medications, infections, injury to the skin, and changes in weather.
